This weekend is going to be veryvery busy as I vend at a festival out of town, so here’s these quick before I go!

Day 29, “Aztec”

Something very very non-Tock – inspired by Lake Texcoco and the cities they built around it, a giant Mermaid lake-spirit blesses and guards the people who lived there.

Day 30, “Stars”

Something more canon – a Mermaid who’s clearly been through something rough gets blessed with starfish hugs!

Day 31, “Free Draw”

Something Tock-possible – and a flashback, revisiting these two from last year’s last day! Loosely based on my Wife and me (and I can’t believe it took me 31 days to draw a sea turtle Merm, what the eff, self?).

Thanks again to the amazing Maegan Cook  for an awesome Mer-month!! Hope you all enjoyed my entries 🌊

WIP – Steampunking up my Gnome Wings (and other shop notes)

IMG_20190525_204449_648

Mermay catchup and Sunday Gnomedays will be up later, dear readers. In the meantime here’s a sneak peek of something I don’t usually post here, as it’s not directly related to this project – however, that is changing a bit!

Previous Gnome Wings focused solely on the Faerie aspect of my work, but I was inspired recently to see what steampunk elements I can add to them! Small cogs and keys are on their way to me as I speak, so for now I’ve started adjusting my color palette and adding corsets *excited rapid clapping!*

The plan for this one is to add a key on top of the corset, laying over the join in the front, and add cogs to the upper wings (as well as the normal tail-shapes I usually put at the bottom).

More on these as they come, I’m hoping to have a few ready for Salem NY Faerie Fest next month. And of course prints from the comic, as well as stickers and issues of the comic, are always available at my Etsy shop (with issues 1 and 2 available here and here free digitally for all patrons!).

More Mermay catchup and Sunday Gnomedays 5-19-19

Last week was very busy with other projects, but here’s a start to catching up ❤

IMG_20190519_163828_552

Day 17, “Lace”

And happy Sunday Gnomedays too! Potentially non-canon, but let’s say sometime in the future, a Mermaid meets a Gnome – and in sparking their friendship, finds out that she’s a lacemaker, but has no idea what that is! On the next visit, then, the Gnome takes it upon herself to bring an example. And in demonstrating that it’s sometimes worn…. they end up closer than expected 💕

Day 16, “Koi”

A character from possibly the furthest backstory I’ve drawn from, recently mentioned by Misu in another backstory post recounting her people’s history. She’s a kind of priestess, communicating with the water wisps (like wil o’ the wisps) I drew on day 1.

Mermay day 1 ~ World Building Wednesday 41

IMG_20190501_102651_515

Counting this as this week’s WBW due to distraction from the earlier issue drop ❤ Aaand making my notes available to all readers as a special treat! Usually the actual world building text is for patrons only, while I post the associated drawings as a teaser for everyone. Check out my Patreon for more!

It’s time for another world building post, dear readers! Kicking off another month of focusing on those beneath the sea…

Though the Merfolk seem to be the dominant fae of the oceans of Tock’s world, there are still many other faeries there, including this watery version of a wil o’ the wisp! They do seem to be very rare, however, as this dolphin-maid seems very fascinated by her encounter. Like their land/air-based cousins, these water wisps often serve as guides to greater mysteries, sometimes leading ill-intentioned people astray…

‘Tock Daydreams,’ and Happy Lesbian Visibility Day!

tockdaydreams2019_wm

Finally got this done!!! It will actually be featured as the cover for issue 2, BUT I couldn’t resist sharing it today, in honor of Lesbian Visibility Day ❤

So, a special shoutout to all my fellow queer lady-loving-ladyfolks. It’s been some time since I came out, but I continue to be grateful for my journey and all parts of my identity, including this one. When I was growing up in the 90’s, it was a lot more dangerous to be openly myself. I stayed closeted for a while, and then only opened up to select people as I felt necessary. And only when I felt safe. That got better as time went on – as I found a community of other LGBTQ+ people, as I fell in love and gradually became more accepted by my family and other people in my general communities (thank the Gods that we are   e v e r y w h e r e ).

That said, there is still  M U C H  progress to be made. I feel like my culture pretty well accepts cisgender gay men and lesbians who fit into it’s accepted heterosexual “norm” (find one person, get married, have babies), but genderqueer visibility, nonbinary visibility, trans visibility, pansexual visibility, asexual visibility, etc. etc. etc. is just beginning to be addressed, let alone respected. And even though I feel safer in general, there are still SO many places in my country and the world where it’s still not “okay” to show my own love openly.

We are still worlds away from the constant fear I felt about my sexuality when I was first figuring it out, so on this day I can’t help but be grateful for the progress we HAVE made – and hopeful for even more. Safety and visibility for ALL people sooner and sooner.

(And don’t forget – less than one week left to preorder issue 2!!)
