Greetings, new visitors and followers from “The Snow Queen!” I’m so pleased you’ve made your way over here and I hope you enjoyed the show!

Here is a quick rundown of what you’ll find here and on other of my sites:

This site (scrolling right down from here, or at the Archive page): Existing and new pages of my comic in-progress, “Tock the Gnome,” a steampunk/fantasy graphic novel about a Gnome woman on a quest to rescue a legendary Elven princess. Along the way she will learn more about the world she’s been isolated from, and be challenged not only by the characters and creatures she encounters, but by the yearnings of her own heart. Will contain lesbian romance, size-positivity, non-binary gender, fairy tale themes, conundrums and tomfoolery.

I also share occasional bonus art and bonus short stories set in Tock’s world.

Patreon: A crowd-funding website for this project, containing extra goodies not posted here.

rachelillustrates.com: Finished fantasy art and sketches (including one new Gnome drawing every Sunday, called “Sunday Gnomedays”) as well as announcements about other project updates, commissions, etc.

My Etsy: Prints of of my work, coloring books and needle-felted faerie dolls, Gnome Wings, all for sale!

Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you enjoy what you find here! And remember – your program from the show includes a coupon code for my etsy, and if you bought the performance-exclusive Snow Queen coloring book, please tag me ( @rachelillustrates or #rachelillustrates ) so I can see your work too!

Brightest blessings and Faerie Love to all ~~<3

Faerie Gnome

I’ve been doing a very slow read/study of Brian Froud’s books over the last few years, and recently finished his famous work with Alan Lee,, “Faeries.” I enjoyed it very much, of course, but the quote above comes from a page near the back of the book – and it, of course, struck me hard. The information preceding it seems to imply that they’re talking about archeological finds in which tiny humanoid skeletons were discovered, but they identifed them as Gnomes and decided that for the purposes of their book, they do not exist.

What? No. Nope. No no no.

So here is Tock, in defiance. I still adore and respect both Misters Froud and Lee, but strongly disagree with them. Tock, and other Gnomes, will ever be important in my Faerie work. And from and even more personal standpoint, I feel that Gnomes are True

WIP – Orcish hair

Work in progress from the next page, of how I draw the Orc Lady’s hair. Takes some time and focus, but very worth it.

Sketch – Tock in gown

Pencil sketch, Tock in a dream gown, "Tock the Gnome"

Page 54 should be done soon, but in the meantime, here’s something slightly suggestive in terms of an upcoming theme in the story.

If you don’t mind spoilers, you can read more about that intention/inspiration here.

Thanks, always, for reading 🙂

Another page done 🙂

Also, trivia time – I started this comic because, back in 2010, I wanted to submit a shorter webcomic to Crossed Genres for the membership section of their website. If I’d gotten in, I would have had to limit the story to 52 pages (one per week for a year). So if that had been the case, this page – the 52nd – would have been the last one.

While it would have been nice to have a finished comic by now, and I do struggle with getting pages done, I’m still glad where I’m at now and how much further I’m able to go with the story as it has developed.
