Sketch – Crashing the Ball

Pencil sketch, "Crashing the Ball, Tock the Gnome

There’s a good handful of things I’ve got laid out from Tock’s past, in terms of her previous chaos-making, and this is one of them. I plan on finishing the illustration up and writing about it…..but for now let me just say that at one point, she and her friend Eleanore (first seen here) got all fancied up and crashed a noble party – dragging Bumble along as their footman, of course.

Haven’t figured out the details, yet, but its a lot of fun :)

“Purity”

"Purity," ink and colored pencil on paper.

So this is a very personal piece about something I’m going through in real life, but somehow Tock’s the figure in it, so here she is.

I figured out a while ago (for this piece) what her coloration was going to be, since we don’t see that in the comic pages, but I’m glad this got to be the piece that showcases that for the first time.

This piece and one other will be included in an upcoming local show, if you’re interested.

Page 49 preview

There’s very little chance Page 49 will be up on time tomorrow, due to other claims on my time (as usual). The pencil work is done, though, and the ink work is just started, so I expect to have it up by Wednesday instead.

For your patience, though, here’s a preview of the first panel : )

Sketch – Gnomish bonnet

"Gnome bonnet," pencil sketch, "Tock the Gnome"

Just before my recent troubles, I went through a random Western-kick, so I ended up drawing this (I’d attempted this idea before, but not as successfully).

On that note, thanks to the generosity of several people, I do have supplies again, so I should be back to regular updates next week! Thanks to anyone who saw my post last week about donations and helped me out, and thanks as always for reading :)

No update this week

There will be no usual update this week, as I’m having certain problems at home that needed attention.

Instead, if you can, I ask that you take a look at something over on my main art site.

The problems I’ve mentioned are of the financial variety – to the point that I’m having a lot of trouble paying bills, including heat and rent – so I’ve put out a call for donations. If you choose to donate, you will be “repaid” in art.

Click here for more information (and examples of what art repayment is available).

Thanks as always to all of you for reading. There will be an actual Tock-related update, even if its not a full page, next week.

Holiday update plans

Leave it to Tock to carry around her own mistletoe...

Tomorrow was supposed to be a page day, but the holidays have intervened, and I’ll be out of town before I can get the next page done. So above is a consolation Tock pin-up with some seasonal flair. Page 44 will be up on Monday December 31st, making Page 45 the first page of the new year (which works perfect, btw).

Thanks to all of you for following this story of mine. I appreciate every one of you :)

And below, if you like spoilers, is a little preview of the very next panel.

I hope you all have a great, and safe, rest of the holiday season!

Sketch – Chibi style research, Tock style

What the comic might look like if I amped up the cute.

Those of you who don’t follow my other art work might not know that I am a huge, huge fangirl (I promise this relates, so bear with me).

Over the past month or so, I’ve gotten sucked into a new fandom which has a lot of fanart in “chibi” style. I haven’t drawn chibi’s in a long time – probably because your average chibi  is really close in proportion to Gnomes. But because of my fangirling, I wanted to try my hand at them again, so this is me trying to figure out how a chibi-style would work taking different races’ proportions into account.

Here we have, then, a hypothetical Elf, a Dwarf, and a Gnome, all chibi-fied. Do not take any of this as canon, I was just having a bit of fun :)

"Tock the Gnome" sketch, Bored Orc Woman

Not the one we just met, of course. But in keeping with upcoming things.

Sketch – The House of White

More of one of the characters from this earlier bonus piece, with two other characters from her own story.

Again, what’s going on here will connect to Tock’s story eventually too, so I hope you keep them in mind.

A little something while we wait

Hi everyone!

Since this  hiatus is taking a bit longer than I’d hoped, I put up a poll on my deviantART page recently, asking if anyone would be interested in seeing something special as a bonus until the next page is done. Most everyone voted yes (thank you!), so here that is.

NOTE: the following image contains very slight spoilers, for the setup of the world itself (not the overarching plot).

.

.

.

I did this illustration a while back in order to get out of an art slump, and held off on posting it then in interest of showing it to you waaaaaay later, but you are all amazing for hanging in there and waiting so long  for new pages, so here it is now!

These women are versions of specific characters from two popular fairy tales (well, one more popular than the other, but I don’t want to give too much away). That’s all I can say for now, except to mention that they will be referenced later in Tock’s story.

Thank you all again for your patience. I hope to be back to regular updates within a month.

Slight change in updates

There’s going to be a slight delay in updates for the next couple of weeks, as I catch up on some paid commission work.

If you want to see what I’m up to in the meantime, I’ll be posting progress on those commissions and some work that’s already finished over on my website and my Tumblr.

Also, I’m thinking of switching the official update day from Mondays to Wednesdays. Any thoughts?

Thanks as always for your patience :)

Some thoughts on PIPA/SOPA

I try not to talk about too many of my own opinions here, since I’m just trying to tell a story. But what’s going on with PIPA and SOPA makes me nervous, as a citizen and a webcomic artist.

Please take a moment, if you can, to watch this video. It explains the situation in a more visual way, for those of us who do better with that (rather than reading articles about it, that is).

The bills, both of them, are worded vaguely enough that many of us who post creative work on the internet for a living could be penalized harshly for even referencing something copyrighted by a major corporation. My own work here directly references another series in its title alone, and while I try to avoid direct references in the art itself, they sometimes pop up as homages to things that inspire me – not in the interest of EVER ripping something off, simply and purely in honor of those things, hoping that my readers might notice and appreciate the nod in that direction.

I’m honestly not sure how much at risk any of us would be for these kinds of references, but what I’ve learned so far worries me enough to speak my part. If any of you follow my more personal work, you’d notice that I also draw a lot of fanart. Again, as homages – never to insult or make money off of someone else’s work. But it seems the way these bills are working, there is a HUGE potential for abuse on the part of the corporations and the government.

So please, if you have a spare 5 minutes, take a look. Educate yourself.

SOPA appears to have been shelved for now, by the way, but PIPA is up for vote on the 24th.

Thank you.

Special commission offer at Rachelillustrates.com

If you’re interested, I’m now offering $7 Sketch commissions! Details are here.

The example image relates to “Tock the Gnome,” by the way. Please take a look if you can :)

“Rescue Quest” on hiatus

As I mentioned before, current circumstances at my support-job have been really messing with my schedule and draining my energy. This has made it very difficult for me to produce any art work, especially for “Tock.” I’m officially back to Page updates now because I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. But the truth is that the situation has not improved much.

On top of that, I’ve been presented with the opportunity to participate in the “Once Upon a Time” anthology, which – if I get in – means I’d be getting my work published. That would be a first for me, and its a subject I’m really, really passionate about, so its kind of a big deal. The problem is that I definitely don’t have the time/energy to focus on that and continue updating this comic on a semi-regular basis.

Because of all this, I’ve decided to put “Tock the Gnome: The Rescue Quest” on unofficial hiatus, just until my submission for Once Upon is complete. I hate doing this, but I think its for the best and – very importantly – I am NOT abandoning this story or these characters. I still have a lot to say with them and I intend on seeing it through, even if it takes a while.

Submissions for Once Upon are open until March 30, 2012, so we’ll be back to page updates the week after that at the very latest. In the meantime, I’ll still be working on world-building for “Tock,” so please keep watching/reading for bonus posts like that. Also, if anyone has anything they’d like to submit as filler (guest comics, fanart, etc.) please send them to rachelillustrates@yahoo.com, subject: “Tock the Gnome Filler” (thanks in advance to anyone who sends anything in!). And if you’re interested in seeing any of my other illustration work, including design work for my Once Upon submission (if they’ll let me post it), please check out my website/blog, Tumblr, or deviantART sites.

Finally, I want to thank you all for your patience. My circumstances make it difficult to update as regularly as most other webcomics do, but I appreciate each and every one of you that’s stopped in and taken a look. Please keep an eye out for those world-building posts (including the sketch series I started posting last week) and I promise, in Spring, it will be well worth the wait.

Sketch – Gnome Roles: Soldier

I’ve started a series of sketches depicting Gnomes that are on different life paths than Tock, Bumble, or anyone else I’ve mentioned so far in-canon. Here’s the first, based on this bonus piece from a couple weeks ago.

The woman pictured is the lowest level infantry in the Queen’s army, equipped with standard uniform and a falcata-style short sword (again, as shown before). The sketch below her shows a higher officer’s coat – which is white, not brown – and the “cogs” they pin to the front are ornaments displaying their ranks and accomplishments. Most officers can have up to three cogs. The highest ranking officers – like the Queen’s personal guard – are also equipped with guns.

Page 29 lines

The situation that prompted the filler for the last few weeks** hasn’t been resolved yet, but here this is even though its not finished. It’ll be updated with color by next Monday at the latest.

**If anyone’s curious, I wrote a Journal over on my dA site with more details and news about some other art-related things I’m working on.

Bonus art – Gnome/Dwarf lovin’

So these are not characters who will actually appear in the story per se (and please excuse the bumps in the paper from the scan). I drew this for my amazing girlfriend (and co-creator of Tock’s story) recently and wanted to share.

These two are actually based on a couple of our toons from WoW, drawn as if they existed in Tock’s world. I imagine the Gnome woman is a soldier in the Queen’s army (the jacket should look familiar), and the Dwarven woman is a rogueish individual involved in a kind of black-market trading (due to a certain level of strictness in Dwarven culture – more on that some other time).

This should be the last piece of bonus art before page updates resume! Thanks again for your patience, and for reading :)

Bonus art – Similar Hats

Something fun for Samhain/Halloween. Blessed holiday, everyone!

Bonus art – Nosebump

Two Gnome women bumping noses, indicating their romantic interest in one another.

In Gnomish courtship, bumping noses is the step before – and just as serious – as the first kiss. Its often used to clarify intentions, if the two involved were friends first. Touching noses is also sometimes a greeting between family members, but obviously in a different context and with different weight.

Upcoming Filler

Life has gotten a bit complicated recently, and will probably remain so for the next couple of weeks. As such, the next three weeks will be  bonus work (finished pieces too, not sketches) while things calm down.

Thank you for being patient with me. Page 29 will be up as soon as its done.

And please check out the Facebook Page, if you’re so inclined, for more up-to-date reports during the wait.
