Another little something in the meantime.
The as-not-yet-identified Orc lady Tock and Bumble have just encountered, looking peaceful….but really more of an excuse for me to draw her hair
More finalized work will be coming once I can focus on pages again, so hopefully soon. I’ve also been doing some character development in-between commission work lately, world-building, and brainstorming plans for the first published book. So even though I haven’t been able to post much or update the comic itself, things are still in the works, and thanks to all of you who are still keeping an eye out here!
Soooooo still working on updates, but in the meantime, here’s an ancient sketch of our heroine and her newly-acquired-and-hopefully-obvious love interest:
(I feel I’ve come a ways in terms of Orc Lady’s character design. And yes, she has a name, we’ll get there soon.)
Hi everyone. I just wanted to say thanks for your interest in my work, particularly this comic.
Below is a screencap of WordPress’s activity tracker for this site, in terms of visits, for this past year. I know I haven’t been posting a lot these last few months, but I’m still very flattered that so many people have taken a look at Tock and her story, and at how widespread those visits have been.
I’ve been catching up on other paid work recently, and still dealing with life-stuff, but big things are in the works. I hope to have another update soon, with hopefully some sketchwork or notes even sooner. I’m also currently working on a plan for the first published volume, which will start happening once I get to a certain point in the story (which is a bunch more pages from now, but still). It may not always look like it, but this comic is still very important to me, and I hope to make something from it that really speaks to people.
So again, all of my thanks. Hope you’ll see more here soon
A sketch I started a while ago, and just finished up, of Bumble’s immediate family (minus Tock). Lots of menfolk involved in Sprizzenfritz Airships, looks like….
Finally back to working on pages again
Also trying out a little something new – putting watermarks on the pages. Please let me know if its distracting/bothersome/etc.
Also also, for those of you reading from New York State, I’ll be attending the New York Faerie Festival tomorrow afternoon. Not as a vendor, just for fun. But still, if you see me there, feel free to say hi.
And thanks, as always, for reading.
Hello dear readers, this is just a quick note to say that I’ve made progress on the next page, AND I’ve been posting said progress on my Tumblr.
So if you’d like to see how its coming along so far, please take a look there! And in any case, I plan to have Page 50 finished and posted here very soon.
Thank you all for sticking with me, I hope you like what’s coming
Another random something while I’m waiting to be able to work on pages again.
Fun fact! The world of Tock’s story is set in originally developed out of some
assuredly godawful Sailor Moon fanfiction I wrote in middle/high school.
Luckily, it evolved into something way more complex.
But Sailor Moon was my first anime, and I loved it, so I still get random bouts of nostalgia every now and then. This happened during one of those.
No new pages yet, but to mark the day, I’m posting this in-progress piece of a certain Orc and a certain Gnome sharing a dance <3
This will be finished with simple color in the style of the comic pages eventually. And hopefully I’ll have something more to post soon. Thanks, as always, for reading.
ANNOUNCEMENT: For personal reasons, I will be switching back to a random update schedule until further notice.
I wish this were avoidable, but I’m going through a difficult time right now and I need to focus on getting certain parts of my life in order before I can give this comic the attention it deserves.
I also need to catch up on donation commissions, as I advertised a few weeks ago. In the meantime, I will still be posting information and bonus sketches and such when I can, but not on any planned schedule.
Hopefully this period of minor chaos won’t last too long. Thank you for your patience in the meantime. If you want any further information, please contact me here or via the Tock the Gnome Facebook page. And if you’re interested, I am still accepting donations with repayment (from me) in art, so please click the link in the above paragraph if you’re curious about that.
So yes, I’ll post what I can when I can, and plan on another announcement as soon as I’m sure I can be back to regular updates. Thanks, always, for reading.
So this isn’t for sale (if there ever is Tock jewelry for sale, trust me, you’ll know), but my amazing, amazing fiancee made some Tock-inspired jewelry for me this past Valentine’s Day and I wanted to share <3
Also, yup, that’s me. Hullo.
Next page next week.
This is one of those moments where I’m sure, if logic prevailed, Bumble would try to have Tock committed.
There’s very little chance Page 49 will be up on time tomorrow, due to other claims on my time (as usual). The pencil work is done, though, and the ink work is just started, so I expect to have it up by Wednesday instead.
For your patience, though, here’s a preview of the first panel : )
Just before my recent troubles, I went through a random Western-kick, so I ended up drawing this (I’d attempted this idea before, but not as successfully).
On that note, thanks to the generosity of several people, I do have supplies again, so I should be back to regular updates next week! Thanks to anyone who saw my post last week about donations and helped me out, and thanks as always for reading
There will be no usual update this week, as I’m having certain problems at home that needed attention.
Instead, if you can, I ask that you take a look at something over on my main art site.
The problems I’ve mentioned are of the financial variety – to the point that I’m having a lot of trouble paying bills, including heat and rent – so I’ve put out a call for donations. If you choose to donate, you will be “repaid” in art.
Thanks as always to all of you for reading. There will be an actual Tock-related update, even if its not a full page, next week.
Fun fact: I keep the original copies of each page in an Itoya portfolio, and as of this page, I’ve finally filled one up
Confession time: The reason page 46 was a week late was because all my creative time that week went to a different project.
That project was something with which to propose marriage to my girlfriend of 9 years.
I had also drawn this to post as the filler piece that week (instead of the sketch I ended up posting), but life intervened and I ended up having to push my plans back.
But I’ve now asked her, and she said yes <3 So here this is finally too.
(If you don’t remember from before, these are Tock’s parents.)
Further work on this sketch. I hope to get this made into stickers (to sell and/or as part of a Kickstarter campaign, I’m still brainstorming on that front).
My creative energies and time these past couple of weeks had to go to other things, so Page 46 will be up next Monday instead.
Instead, here’s something happening “off-screen”:
Here’s something for those of you interested in how the story gets written.
The meeting of characters that we’ve seen in the last few pages was originally supposed to take place in a tavern. Tock and Bumble were going to land The Bucket without any problems, walk into the Orc settlement they’d chosen without too much hassle, and find a much more settled people than it turns out my Orcs are going to be like. Entering a combination tavern/general store (…yeah, I know), Bumble was going to head off to barter the goods they brought with them while Tock gathered information. So she would have been alone when the events of Page 45 took place. Well, except for the other Orcs in the establishment too.
Then this happened in my sketchbook, and that idea got thrown out the window:
(Yes, that’s how my handwriting actually looks. And certain names have been smudged around a bit, to avoid minor spoilers.)
Usually pages get planned out a bit more organized-like than this, but apparently the creative process had a different idea for this part of the story. At least on the most basic planning level.
Remember all those times I said exciting things were coming and I promised all the delays and hiatuses would be worth it?
This is the moment all that officially starts.
(Or in other words, if its not obvious what’s happening here, I’m not doing my job right.)
Due to some technical difficulties with my home computer, page 45 will be up tomorrow, Tuesday January 8th, instead of today
Hot off the presses, but still officially the last page of 2012
Have a great, and safe, New Year’s!
(Note: You also might notice that the Orc’s hair is a bit different now. I found the white linework in it, as originally seen in page 42, waaaaaaaaaaay too distracting. So that page will be updated later this week as well.)
